B2B SEO Tools Review: Why we chose SE Ranking vs SEMRUSH or Ahrefs

Marketers are faced with a plethora of SEO tools, from the heavy hitters of Ahrefs, Moz, and Semrush to the smaller specialised platforms such as Keywood Tool or Mangools.  Knowing which one to choose and how to get the most from your monthly subscription can be challenging.

Posted on: 25 June 2026 by Richard Kendrick

SE Ranking is one of our affiliate partners. We first purchased the platform in 2023, and after relying on it for two years, we decided to join their partnership scheme.  We benefit from commission on subscriptions resulting from clicks on this article.  The commission does not impact your purchase price, and the money we receive contributes to running the agency.  We only recommend platforms we use ourselves and believe are effective for other marketers.

Arboreal Marketing chose SE Ranking as our principal SEO platform. We use it to manage all of our clients, or we recommend it to clients who manage their SEO in-house.  So why did we choose this over the big players such as SEMRUSH or Ahrefs, and what benefits has that given us?

This review looks at why SE Ranking is a great choice for SEO management, from startups looking to build a foundation of content, through to enterprise businesses who would normally rely on big brands like SEMRUSH.

What does an SEO tool need to do for marketers?

Before we compare these three platforms, it’s important to look at the important features of a good B2B SEO tool.  The requirements for B2B marketers are different from those of eCommerce or B2C websites, because long tail and high intent terms are extremely important in B2B.  If your product is niche or appeals to a very specific sector, then you need a platform with a database that can track low-volume terms as well as the high ones.

The core SEO tasks for B2B marketers are usually keyword research, cluster building and project tracking for a few higher volume primary keywords supported by lots of low volume but high intent cluster keywords.  Auditing on-page SEO performance is critical, as is competitor monitoring, tracking and keyword gap analysis.  Finally, checking and managing backlinks is also a regular and important task.

B2B departments will fluctuate in scale for these tasks based on the size of the business and the dedication of resources.  Start-ups or smaller businesses with low marketing headcount will dedicate time to fewer SEO activities compared to a large B2B organisation with its own SEO department.  We will be looking at SE Ranking vs SEMRUSH and AHREFS with both sizes of SEO teams in mind.

SE Ranking vs SEMRUSH vs Ahrefs comparisons

Keyword research and cluster building

Keyword research in SE Ranking is very detailed and easy.  Type your keyword in, and then look through similar and related keywords, plus questions for informational intent.  The interface is focused on the user experience, so adding keywords to lists takes just two clicks.  You can quickly see the SERP competitors, and each keyword is also given a competition score to show quickly how hard that keyword is to rank for, even when it has a low keyword difficulty.

Ahrefs’ keyword research tools are very similar to SE Ranking; the same information is returned, but it’s also included with position history and Ad position history.  These both give additional data, but it’s hard to quickly glean insight from them, and they make finding the SERP results harder to find.

SEMRUSH is also clear and easy to read. You have to check the defaults to make sure you are always searching the UK, as it has a habit of defaulting to US results instead, which can be a frustration.  SEMRUSH has a habit of putting ads for other modules and upgrades across all of their pages, too, which gets in the way of the data being displayed – unlike SE Ranking and Ahrefs, who are much more subtle about it.

For two of the three, cluster group building is simple; SE Ranking has a dedicated keyword manager, Ahrefs has Keyword lists, but SEMRUSH is unnecessarily complicated and doesn’t have a clear option for adding keywords to lists to export or to add to your project.

Verdict: All three are very similar; SE Ranking wins for the clarity of the data returned, with Ahrefs close behind.  SEMRUSH has a few niggly annoyances that lose them points.

Project management and rank tracking

Any SEO platform should allow you to add projects for either your website portfolio or sub-brands.  As standard on their lowest subscription tiers, SE Ranking provides 10 projects (Core level), Ahrefs 5 projects (Lite tier) and SEMRUSH 5 projects (Pro tier).  So already, from the start, SE Ranking is giving you double the capacity for project management.

Setting up the projects is easy, SE Ranking has a dedicated wizard that walks you through each stage, allowing you to add different search engines: Google, Google local by region or county, and Bing, being the most important for B2B users.  You then assign keywords to track within the project, and for SE Ranking, up to five competitor URLs. The project will then automatically conduct an SEO audit for the website.  Finally, you can connect your GA4 and Google Search Console accounts to track your organic search traffic performance against your keyword rankings.  It takes less than five minutes to set up and then another twenty minutes or so for SE Ranking to collect all the necessary information to provide ranking positioning and performance.  From here, it’s a simple question of monitoring ranking performance, competitors, and mapping your Google Search Console reporting to your project keywords.  AI Search performance is also included in SE Ranking projects, but it isn’t in SEMRUSH.

Ahrefs only includes five projects in its basic tier subscription, and project management is driven through the dashboard screen.  The snapshot view is good and gives a quick feeling of how the website is performing, but unlike SE Ranking, the deeper dive for information requires a lot more clicking and navigation.

SEMRUSH takes an alternate approach to project management and integrates it into every analysis option.  For instance, if you click on SEO, you are immediately taken to a project, rather than to keyword research or content.  This is good when you are only interested in one website, or your SEO work is focused on one aspect of SEO, but it isn’t as helpful as the other two platforms if you want to manage multiple projects or skip straight to keyword researching.

Verdict: SE Ranking and Ahrefs are very close again here; SE Ranking wins it because it comes with double the number of projects at the lowest subscription level, and the interface is so logical and easy to use.

Site audits and on-page technical SEO

An easy-to-understand site audit and assessments of on-page technical SEO are essential for improving organic traffic.  Having a clear road map showing which issues should be prioritised and how they affect SEO is important.

SEMRUSH produces excellent and very clear site audits which list issues ranked by priority and, helpfully, a short explanation of how to fix them.  Audits also include an AI search health check as standard, grading the website against the top LLMs or AI search algorithms.

SE Ranking is a close second behind SEMRUSH for audits.  The on-page SEO audit provides a clear, but detailed view of how a single page performs for a target keyword, and it pulls SERP competitor page info to benchmark against.  It’s very easy to use and provides insight into the changes needed to enhance a page.

The site audits are also very good, but the information returned is not as clear as SEMRUSH. The UI is a little numerical rather than graphical, and insight takes a few clicks to find.

Finally, Ahrefs has a site audit, which looks like an Excel spreadsheet; this means you have to work harder to find the insight.  The same data is there as on the other two platforms, it’s just much harder to find.

Verdict: SEMRUSH wins this one by a nose, very good presentation, good hand-holding for users and data-driven.  SE Ranking is very close behind, thanks to its on-page SEO audits.

Backlink analysis

Google’s EEAT framework grades Authority and Trustworthiness very highly.  To measure this, third-party SEO platforms have devised an Authority score to measure the impact that backlinks have on your website.  The more editorial backlinks from trustworthy (in Google’s eyes) sites you have, the better your rankings.

All three platforms have backlink auditing tools to measure your performance and compare it to benchmarks or competitors.  All three also build backlink management into your projects, so you can see quickly how strong your domain score is and where your backlinks are coming from.

All three also provide backlink gap analysis, so you can target competitors who have a higher domain authority than your site does.  You can also find toxic backlinks and see the spread of links across your pages to ensure it isn’t just your homepage driving your authority score.

Verdict: A three-way tie, the features are the same, the clarity and insight is on par, and management is equally easy for SE Ranking, Ahrefs and SEMRUSH.

Does SEMRUSH, SE Ranking or Ahrefs have the best AI Integration?

Keyword research takes a long time; it’s a laborious process of clicking and scrolling.  So anything that can accurately reduce that drain on resources is a massive bonus.  An MCP (Model Context Protocol) connection links your SEO platform to an LLM such as Claude.  You can then ask AI to research keywords, build clusters and create dashboards based on your prompts.

As with everything to do with AI, the quality of output is only as good as the prompt you put in, but we’ve found that the SE Ranking x Claude MCP is excellent.  It can very quickly process keyword research and then pull various data points from SE Ranking to assist with your SEO strategy.  It reduces a large amount of time scrolling and poring over synonyms and semantics, and adds value to an already excellent package.

SEMRUSH and Ahrefs also have MCP connectors available through their platforms. Ahrefs comes with 100,000 credits per month for AI connectors, and SEMRUSH only comes with 50,000 credits per month.

We’ve increasingly used this feature since its introduction, and the benefits in time are significant when the prompt and supporting data are thorough.  Before committing to an MCP provider, check how many credits each call and response costs and how complete the MCP connection is.  Some only pull research data, while others can give a full analysis on projects (SE Ranking, for instance).

Verdict: SE Ranking wins this one for us – loads of credits in the basic monthly package, and we’ve experienced excellent customer service behind the scenes.  Ahrefs is second, and SEMRUSH is nowhere close.

SE Ranking vs SEMRUSH vs Ahrefs cost comparison

This is where we see the biggest difference between the platforms.  All three have an entry-level price point, but the real differentiator is in the details between each tier and what you get per platform for your money.

SE Ranking Price Comparison:

The Core tier has a 2026 price of £76 per month and includes:

  • 10 projects
  • 1 manager seat
  • 2,000 keywords
  • 5 domains for AI search
  • 250,000 pages to audit a month
  • 100,000 credits and access to MCP with Claude

The Growth tier (with a 2026 price of £167.20) per month adds 2 more manager seats, 3,000 more keywords and up to 30 projects, making it perfect for agency work.  It also has 2 million MCP credits a month as standard.

SEMRUSH Price Comparison:

There are three tiers for SEMRUSH customers.  The Pro, Guru and Business.  The prices for each listed below are converted from dollars to pounds at the rate set on 25/06/2026 and so may vary.

The Pro tier has a 2026 price of £89.13 per month and includes:

  • 5 projects
  • 500 keywords
  • Position tracking
  • 50,000 MCP credits

The Guru and Business tiers build on the pro with a maximum of 5,000 keywords at the Business level and 40 projects to track, but you’ll have to part with £316 per month to access this.

Ahrefs Price Comparison:

Ahrefs also has three pricing tiers: the Lite, Standard and Advanced.  It’s closer to SE Ranking in terms of value, but still loses out on features for more money.

The Lite tier costs £83 per month and includes:

  • 5 projects
  • 6 months of data
  • 750 keywords tracked
  • 100,000 crawl credits
  • 1 user included

It includes access to MCP for AI connections and access to a BETA social media manager, too.

As with SEMRUSH, the Standard and Advanced plans add more keywords and projects, with the top tier providing 50 projects for £299.

Price comparisons – who wins between SE Ranking, SEMRUSH and Ahrefs?

We think the value demonstrated above is clear:

  • SE Ranking provides double the number of projects at the lowest tier
  • It gives 2,000 tracked keywords, whereas the other platforms don’t reach 1,000
  • It supports MCP AI connectors very well

As of June 2026 - It is still £78 per year cheaper than Ahrefs and £157 a year cheaper than SEMRUSH

Our final verdict: SE Ranking or the Big Brands?

As shown above, SE Ranking provides exceptional value for money AND goes toe to toe with the big brand platforms SEMRUSH and Ahrefs.  The lack of projects, the small number of keywords and the limited credits for other modules means despite great features, Ahrefs and SEMRUSH cannot compete with the lowest tier price that SE Ranking offers.

Considering that the keyword database is very comprehensive, the backlinks and auditing facilities are super solid, and it’s also future-proofed for AI, SE Ranking is our first choice.

Which is why we have used it successfully for the last three years.

B2B SEO Tools: Frequently Asked Questions

SE Ranking has a very good English language keyword database.  For B2B keywords, SE Ranking has a good repository of long-tail keywords and niche content.  Ahrefs and SEMRUSH will have slightly larger keyword databases, but marginally so.  They do win in non-English language keywords, however, so if you’re across multiple territories, then it’s worth checking all three before making a decision.

SE Ranking provides 10 projects at its lowest subscription tier, which is plenty for in-house SEO management or small agencies.  For the larger companies, each tier increases the project capacity, with 30 projects at the growth level subscription.  As a small agency, we’ve found the Core tier to give us the right mix of ROI on SEO platform costs and close SEO management for our key clients.

SE Ranking has specifically tiered the pricing structure to ensure that there is an option for every size of business. The Core level is exceptional value for money compared to Ahrefs or SEMRUSH, and gives a good mix of manager seats and tracked keywords on projects.  The MCP connection is invaluable for sole traders or lone marketers who need support researching keyword strategies, and the flexible add-ons are well-priced to allow flexibility in the features needed for each small business.
